Anti-War Haiku Wall

Spring Haiku—2003
Mark Johnson (USA)

somber St. Patrick’s—
winter-weary New Yorkers
brace for spring attacks.

far-off circling birds—
do they augur good or ill
this war-weighted spring?

season of new growth
marks leaders’ insane descent
to war’s cold chaos.

how many mushrooms,
large, small, radioactive,
will burst forth this spring?

instead of birdsongs,
screech of tanks, hiss of missiles,
wailing for the dead

satisfactory--
air quality reported,
we go on breathing.
